Gov. Gregoire Announces Over $10 Million to Reduce Homelessness

OLYMPIA – Governor Chris Gregoire today announced over $10 million has been awarded by the Washington Department of Community, Trade and Economic Development (CTED) to nine county initiatives to reduce homelessness.  Projects in Benton, Chelan, Clallam, Douglas, Franklin, King, Pierce, Snohomish, Thurston, Walla Walla and Whatcom counties are recipients of the grants.

“All it takes is one emergency for a family to be stricken with tremendous financial hardship,” said Governor Gregoire.  “It’s important that we provide the most at risk citizens with the help they need.  Those struggling with mental health issues, trauma history or substance abuse are especially at risk.”

The new Homeless Grant Assistance Program (HGAP) within CTED administers the grants.  The program supports the implementation of Washington’s ten-year homeless plan by encouraging planning and action at the county level.

“Addressing homelessness in Washington involves implementing programs that reduce homelessness at a local level,” said CTED Director Juli Wilkerson.  “CTED’s Homeless Grant Assistance Program (HGAP) represents a creative approach to supporting the implementation of local homeless plans to reduce homelessness.”

Details on the projects are available on CTED’s web site: http://www.cted.wa.gov/DesktopModules/CTEDPublications/CTEDPublicationsView.aspx?tabID=0&ItemID=3914&MId=870&wversion=Staging
