Governor Chris Gregoire.
MLK Holiday Memorial Observance

Taping:  November 30, 2006
Event:  January 13, 2007

Hi, I’m Governor Chris Gregoire.  I am honored to extend warm greetings to all of you attending the Martin Luther King Remembrance Service.  Today, you celebrate an extraordinary life and a legacy that continues to challenge and inspire our nation.

Some of you here may have heard Dr. King speak on television, on the radio, or perhaps even in person.  His words pierced the hearts of his listeners and birthed a new hope for equality, equity and a spirit of brotherhood that transcended the color of one’s skin.

Now, nearly 39 years after his death, his vision for a united America continues to call us to action, and the dream he so eloquently articulated on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial lives on, captivating the hearts and minds of a new generation of young people.

I hope that as you honor Dr. King’s memory today, you will be reminded of the powerful impact that citizens can have on their communities, cities, states and even their nation.

Dr. King’s sacrifices were immense, and we honor him by giving back.  I would like to encourage each of you to volunteer your time and talents for the benefit of others this weekend.  I can think of no better way to honor Dr King’s memory than to carry on the values and the work that so defined his life.

Thank you for coming today and please accept my best wishes for a meaningful time of reflection and fellowship.
