State News ReleaseSuperintendent of Public Instruction Date: November 18, 2005 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Kim Schmanke, Media Relations Manager, OSPI, 360.725.6015, kschmanke@ospi.wednet.edu Federal meal assistance funds available Child and Adult Care Food Program funds meals for children and eligible adults OLYMPIA -- The Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction's (OSPI) Child Nutrition Services office is encouraging eligible non-residential licensed child care centers, family day care homes, homeless shelters, at-risk centers, and some adult day care centers in Washington to participate in the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP). This federal program reimburses some of the costs associated with serving meals to children and functionally impaired adults. OSPI's Child Nutrition Services has administered the federal assistance program in Washington since 1989. Its mission is to assist school districts and other child and adult care institutions in providing quality nutrition programs to all children - regardless of income level - and qualified adults. The following care centers and institutions may participate in the CACFP:
The federal food program provides reimbursement for meals at established rates based on family income of the children and adults served. Meals served to eligible homeless children and children in at-risk centers are reimbursed at the free rate. These federal funds help institutions offset some of their food costs while providing well-balanced, nutritious meals and snacks to enrolled participants. Meals will be made available to enrolled participants at no separate charge. The monthly income eligibility guidelines listed as follows are used to determine reimbursement in centers.
