We are here for you

Welcome to the Office of the Education Ombudsman (OEO).  We are a new state agency, within the Governor’s Office, created to serve K-12 students, their families, their teachers and the communities that support them.  OEO helps families and schools learn how to develop partnerships that support student success, and brings parents and educators together to resolve conflicts that can affect student academic achievement.  We offer information about the public school system, assistance with resolving conflicts between families and schools, free trainings, presentations and publications. Visit our website www.waparentslearn.org and learn more about us.

October is Washington State “Family Involvement in Education Month"

Governor Gregoire has proclaimed October as "Family Involvement in Education Month." The most important messages of the proclamation include the recognition that "family involvement in a child’s learning is critical to success in school and life" and that "family involvement, which requires a vision, policy and framework, is a legitimate element of the public education system." Visit our web site to read the full text of the proclamation.  We hope this proclamation will create momentum and inspire special school-family partnership events in school buildings this year.

Families and educators can call our toll-free number 1-866-297-2597 to speak with an Ombudsman about how to form school-family partnerships.

Family Involvement Tips for Schools and Parents

To celebrate Family Involvement month OEO has published a list of involvement strategies for both families and educators. "25 Tips to Get Involved in your Child's Education" for parents (Link to 25 Tips for Parents) and “25 Tips for Schools to Involve Parents” for educators.  (Link to 25 Tips for Schools) The tips are also available on our web site.

NEW!  OEO Parent Handbooks

Since being an involved parent means being an informed parent, we have published a series of four parent handbooks titled: "What every parent needs to know."  These handbooks cover important information that families need in order to partner effectively with schools:

  • "What every parent needs to know: How to Be an Education Advocate" - Informs parents about how the public school system works and how to form partnerships with schools; gives practical tips for good communication with schools; and suggests ways to resolve conflict with schools.

  • "What every parent needs to know: Basic Education Rights and Opportunities in Public Schools"- Covers student rights and responsibilities in Washington State; attendance, truancy, and the process for filing petitions; and answers questions about students' rights to appeal discipline actions.

  • "What every parent needs to know: Discipline in Public Schools" - Covers enrollment policies; how and why students can be disciplined; and explains the different kinds of discipline and specific actions implemented for each.

  • "What every parent needs to know: Protecting the Educational Rights of Students with Disabilities in Public Schools" - Covers finding educational help for students with disabilities and understanding the legal protections and policies for these students.

There are three ways to receive free copies:

1. Call our toll-free number 1-866-297-2597.

2. Download manuals from our website: www.waparentslearn.org

3. Call toll-free and request a CD-ROM with all four manuals. (For requests of more than three sets of each manual.)
